The Indian Flag sailed through many changes to arrive at what it is today. These changes reflect the political developments of our country. We present some historical milestones in the evolution of our National Flag.
This was the first tricolour unfurled on August 7, 1906 during a protest rally in Calcutta, now Kolkata. The flag had three horizontal bands of equal width with the top being orange, the centre yellow and the bottom green in colour. It had eight half-opened lotus flowers on the top stripe, a picture of the sun and a crescent moon on the bottom stripe and the words 'Vande Mataram' inscribed in the centre.

On August 22, 1907 Madame Cama unfurled another tricolour flag in Stuttgart, Germany. This flag had a green stripe on top, saffron in the centre and red at the bottom. The green stood for Islam and the saffron for both Hinduism and Buddhism. The flag had eight lotuses in a line on the green band representing the eight provinces of British India. Madame Cama, Veer Savarkar and Shyamji Krishna Varma jointly designed the flag. After the outbreak of World War I, this flag became known as the Berlin Committee Flag.
This flag was used during the Home Rule Movement in 1917. It was adopted by Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Annie Besant. The seven white stars signified the Saptarishi constellation which is sacred to the Hindus. However, this flag was not very popular among Indians.

This flag was unofficially adopted in 1921 by the All India Congress Committee. The white, green and red colours represented the minority religions, Muslims and Hindus respectively and was widely used even though it wasn't officially adopted by the Indian National Congress. The year 1931 was a landmark in the history of the flag. A resolution adopting a tricolour flag as the National Flag was passed by the Indian National Congress. It had a spinning wheel symbolising the progress of the nation.

This is the present Indian flag which was designed by Pingali Venkayya. The Asoka Chakra replaced the spinning wheel in the middle of the flag. The chakra was taken from the Lion Capital of Asoka which is located at the top of the Asoka pillar at Sarnath. The official flag specifications state that the flag should be made out of khadi, which is a special type of handmade cloth that Mahatma Gandhi used to make himself.

The idea of flying a flag grew fro The from the requirements of ancient warfare and the battlefield.Shields were painted with emblems to identify friends and foes. Warriors needed to know where their leaders were thus the custom of carrying a pole was adopted. An emblem such as a shield, animal or religious device was attached to the pole for identifications The emblems were also used for identity and to cover suits of armour, thus giving birth to the Coat of Arms. These emblems were the forerunners of modern flags. The Romans were the first to use a cloth flag. This flag was square and fastened to cross bars at the end of a spear. The idea of fastening a flag to the side of a pole soon followed. Strict rules are followed when designing an emblem and creating a modern flag.

Being a national symbol the Indian Flag has to be respected by every Indian. Here are certain dos and don'ts associated with the Indian Flag. When the National Flag is raised the saffron colour band should be on top.No flag or emblem should be placed either above the National Flag or to its right. All other flags are to be placed to the left of the National Flag if they are hung in a line. When the National Flag is carried in a procession or parade, it shall be on the marching right or in front of the centre of the line, if there is a line of other flags. Normally the National Flag should be flown over important government buildings like the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Parliament House, the Supreme Court of India, the High Courts, the Secretariats and the Commissioners’ office. The National Flag or any imitation of it must not be used for the purpose of trade, business or profession. The National Flag should always be taken down in the evening at sunset.

The National Flag must never touch the ground or water, be used as a tablecloth or draped in front of a platform or cover a statue, plaque or cornerstone. The National Flag may not be intentionally placed upside down, dipped in anything or hold any objects other than flower petals before unfurling. No sort of lettering may be inscribed on the National Flag.It is also insulting to display the flag in a frayed or dirty state. The same rule applies to the flagpoles used to hoist the flag, which should always be in a proper state of maintenance. The flag is allowed to be flown on the aircraft of the President, Vice-President or Prime Minister if they are visiting a foreign country. If the flag is destroyed or contaminated under any circumstances, it must not be thrown away disrespectfully, but should be annihilated in private by burning or any other respectful method like immersion into the Ganga or burial with homage and regard.

-Madame Cama was the first person to hoist the Indian flag on foreign soil on August 22, 1907 in Stuttgart, Germany.
The Indian flag was hoisted on the highest mountain peak of the world, Mount Everest, on May 29, 1953.
The Indian National Flag flew to space in 1984 when Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma went to space. The flag was attached as a medallion on his space suit.
January 26, 2002 was a very special day for Indians. 54 years after the tricolour was adopted as the national flag, ordinary citizens were allowed to hoist it thanks to a public interest petition filed by Navin Jindal, a young industrialist from Madhya Pradesh. Prior to this, the general public could hoist the flag only on a few selected national days like Independence Day and Republic Day.

National Flag Of India Wallpaper

National Flag Of India Wallpaper Biography

source(google.com.pk)
"It will be necessary for us Indians - Hindus, Muslims, Christianls, Jews, Parsis and all others to whom India is their home - to recognize a common flag to live and die for. "-Mahatma Gandhi's quote on our Indian flag.
The Constituent Assembly which drew up the Constitution of India, adopted, on 22 July 1947, the tricolor as Independent India's National Flag. After a debate, the Dhanna ChaIera of Emperor Ashoka was included in the central white stripe of the flag. The same ChaIera adorns the State Emblem adapted from the Sarnath Lion Capitol of Ashoka in addition to the motto from the Mundaka Upanishad, Satyameva Jayate which means: Truth alone triumphs. The ChaIera or the wheel symbolizes the power of the State governed by Dharma, which is the primeval Indian system of justice which is the bedrock, not only of governance but of the socio-politico-economic edifice itself.
'The Indian flag is a horizontal tricolor in equal proportion of deep saffron on saffron on, the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The ratio of the width to the of the length of the flag is two is to three. In the centre of the white stripe, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capito1. This center symbol or the' CHAKRA' is a symbol dating back to 2nd century BC. Its diameter approximates the width of the white stripe 1 foot and 4 inches and it has 24 spokes' which intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The saffron.stands for courage and sacrifice; the white, for purity and truth; the green for growth and auspiciousness.
The significance of the colors and the chakra in the National Flag was amply described by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in the Constituent Assembly which unanimously adopted the National Flag. Dr. S. Radhakrishna explained - "Bhagwa or the saffron color denotes renunciation of disinterestedness. Our leaders must be indifferent to material gains and dedicate themselves to their work. The white in the centre is light, the path of truth to guide our conduct. The green shows our relation to soil, our relation to the plant life here on which all other life depends. The Ashoka Wheel in the centre of the white is the wheel of the law of dharma. Truth or or Satya, dharma or virtue ought to be the controlling principles of those who work under this flag. Again, the wheel denotes motion. There is death in stagnation. There is life in movement. India should no more resist. change, it must move and go forward. The wheel the dynamism of a peaceful change. "
It is important to read the extract from Jawaharlal Nehru's address to the Constituent Assembly for the date on which the national flag was adopted (Tuesday, 22 July 1947):
"I present this Flag to you. This Resolution defines the Flag which I trust you will adopt. In a sense this Flag was adopted not by a formal resolution but by popular acclaim and usage, adopted much more by the sacrifice that surrounded it in the past few decades. We are in a sense only ratifying that popular adoption. It is a Flag which has been variously described. Some people, having misunderstood its significance, have thought of it in communal terms and believe that some part of it represents this community or that. But I may say that when this Flag was devised there was no communal significance attached to it. "
At the same meeting of the Constituent Assembly, Govind Das added:
"There is no touch of communalism in the three colors of the flag. Panditji (i.e., Jawaharlal Nehru) has already told you this in the course of his speech. It is true that at a time when the colors were red, white and green there was a trace if communalism in the flag. But when we changed these colors to saffron, white and green, we declared it in clear words that the three colors had no communal significance. "
The official website of the High Commission of India in London states The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white means purity and truth; and the green for faith and fertility.
On 26th January 2002, the flag code was changed. After 52 years, the citizens of India are free to fly the Indian flag over their homes, offices and factories on any day. Except some basic rules to follow while flying the flags, all other restrictions halt been removed. Now Indians can proudly display the national flag any where and any time. There are some rules and regulations upon how to fly the flag, based on the January 2002 legislation. These include the following:
The National Flag may be hoisted in educational institutions (schools, coil sports camps, scout camps, etc.) to inspire respect for the Flag. An oath of aile' has been included in the flag hoisting in schools.
A member of public, a private organization or an educational institution hoist/display the National Flag on all days and occasions, ceremonial or consistent with the dignity and honor of the National Flag. Section 20fthenew accepts the right of all citizens to fly the flag on their premises.
The flag cannot be used for communal gains, drapery or clothes. As far as possible it should be flown from sunrise to sunset irrespective of the weather. The flag cannot be intentionally allowed to touch the ground or the floor or trail in water. It cannot be draped over the hood, top, and sides or back of vehicles, trains, boats or aircraft. .
No other flag or bunting can be placed higher than the flag. Also, no object, including flowers or garlands or emblems can be placed on or above the flag. The tricolor cannot be used as a festoon, rosette or bunting.
As of January 26th, many have already started hoisting the flags at their premises. This new flag code would not have been made possible if it weren't for one Indian Mr. Navin Jindal, an industrialist from Madhya Pradesh, who had been constantly been arguing fighting against the government and for the citizen's right for the free hoisting of flags. Apparently this particular Indian had filed a law suit and has been fighting for this right for ages until he finally won this right in around end of Dec. 200l.(The obsolete 1950 flag code: A strict flag code announced in the year 1950 regarding  use and display of the national flag. It barred the use of the flag in advertisements or for any other commercial activity. In fact even citizens were not allowed to fly the flag over their homes, offices or factories except on certain designated days like the Republic Day or the Independence Day.)
There is a clear proviso in the flag code permitting putting flower petals inside the national Tricolor before it is unfurled on special occasions like Republic Day and Independence Day ... the proviso permitting the use of petals was added to Section 5.9 January 24, 1997
The Indian national flag was hoisted on Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world on May 29 1953, along with the Union Jack and the Nepalese National flag.
Madam Bhikhaji Rustom Cama was the first Indian to have raised an Indian flag in Germany in August 1907 and announced to the world our political flight with the British for the country's Independence. Madam Cama' s flag had green on the top, golden saffron and red at the bottom. Eight lotuses representing the eight provinces, were lined on the Indian flag. Vande Mataram was written in gold with the Crescent towards the hoist of the flag and the Sun on the other side.
In 1971, the Indian flag went into space on board Apollo-15. It flew into space as a medallion on the spacesuit worn by Cosmonaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, during the Indo-Soviet joint space flight in April 1984.Amiably we also our National Flag by the popular name "TlRANGA".

Neera Chopra lived through abuse, poverty and some tough choices to make her once-unwanted girl child, Pooja Chopra, the Pantaloons Femina Miss Pooja Chopra with her mother.
I don't know where to begin... they were terrible times.. My husband was well-placed, but the marriage had begun to sink almost as soon as it began. Like most women do, I tried to work against all the odds .

My in-laws insisted everything would be alright if I had a son. My first child was a daughter, and that didn't do me any good... but I couldn't walk out. I had lost my father, my brother was in a not-so-senior position in Bata. I didn't want to be a burden on my family and continued to live in my marital home in Kolkata.
I looked after my mother-in-law, who was suffering from cancer, and while bathing her, I would tell myself she would bless me and put things right.

I don't know how I tolerated it all. The least a man can do, if he must philander, is to not flaunt his women in his wife's face. Then began the manhandling. I still wanted my marriage to survive. I was a pure vegetarian and learnt to cook non-vegetarian delicacies thinking it would please him.

Then, I was pregnant again. When Pooja was eight months in my womb, my husband brought a girl to the house and announced he would marry her. I thought of killing myself. I hung on the slight hope that if the baby was a boy, my marriage could be saved.

When Pooja was born a girl, for three days, nobody came to the hospital. There was a squadron leader's wife on the opposite bed, who was kind enough to give me baby clothes for Pooja to wear. When she was 20 days old, I had to make a choice. I left the house with my girls ' Pooja and Shubra, who was seven then. I haven't seen my husband since. I promised myself, even if we had just one roti, we would share it, but together.

I began life in Mumbai with the support of my mother, brother, who was by then married. It wasn't the ideal situation, especially when he had children ' space, money, everything was short. I began work at the Taj Colaba and got my own place. How did I manage' Truth be told, I would put a chatai on the floor, leave two glasses of milk and some food, and bolt the door from outside before going to work. I would leave the key with the neighbours and tell the kids to shout out to them when it was time to leave for school.

Their tiny hands would do homework on their own, feed themselves on days that I worked late. My elder daughter Shubhra would make Pooja do her corrections... This is how they grew up. At a birthday party, Pooja would not eat her piece of cake, but pack it and bring it home to share with her sister. When Shubhra started working, she would skip lunch and pack a chicken sandwich that she would slip in her sister's lunchbox the next day.

I used to pray, 'God, punish me for my karma, but not my innocent little kids. Please let me provide them the basics.' I used to struggle for shoes, socks, uniforms. I was living in Bangur Nagar, Goregaon. Pooja would walk four bus stops down to the St Thomas Academy. Then, too little to cross the road, she would ask a passerby to help her. I had to save the bus money to be able to put some milk in their bodies.

Life began to change when I got a job for Rs 6,000 at the then Goa Penta. Mr Chhabra, the owner, and his wife, were kind enough to provide a loan for me. I sent my daughters to my sister's house in Pune, with my mother as support. I spent four years working in Goa while I saved to buy a small one-bedroom house in Pune (where the family still lives). I would work 16-18 hours a day, not even taking weekly offs to accumulate leave and visit my daughters three or four times a year.

Once I bought my house and found a job in Pune, life began to settle. I worked in Hotel Blue Diamond for a year and then finally joined Mainland China ' which changed my life. The consideration of the team and management brought me the stability to bring them up, despite late hours and the travelling a hotelier must do.

Shubhra got a job in Hotel Blue Diamond, being the youngest employee there while still in college, and managed to finish her Masters in commerce and her BBM. Today, she is married to a sweet Catholic boy who is in the Merchant Navy and has a sweet daughter.
I continue to finish my day job and come home and take tuitions, as I have done for all these years. I also do all my household chores myself.

Through the years, Shubhra has been my anchor and Pooja, the rock. Pooja's tiny hands have wiped away my tears when I broke down. She has stood up for me, when I couldn't speak for myself. Academically brilliant, she participated in all extra-curricular activities. When she needed high heels to model in, she did odd shows and bought them for herself.

When I saw Pooja give her speech on TV, I knew it came from her heart. I could see the twinkle in her eye. And I thought to myself as she won 'My God, this is my little girl.' God was trying to tell me something.
Today, I've no regrets. I believe every cloud has a silver lining. As a mother, I've done nothing great.
'I won due to my mother's karma'

Pantaloons Femina Miss India Pooja Chopra's mother promised 'One day, this girl will make me proud'. Pooja speaks on fulfilling that promise... When I was 20 days old, my mother was asked to make a choice. It was either me ' a girl child, or her husband. She chose me. As she walked out she turned around and told her husband, 'One day, this girl will make me proud'. That day has come. Her husband went on to marry a woman who gave him two sons. Today, as I stand here a Miss India, I don't even know if my father knows that it is me, his daughter, who has set out to conquer the world, a crown on my head. Our lives have not been easy, least so for my mother. Financially, emotionally, she struggled to stay afloat, to keep her job and yet allow us to be the best that we could be. I was given only one condition when I started modelling ' my grades wouldn't drop.

All the girls in the pageant worked hard, but my edge was my mother's sacrifice, her karma. Today, when people call to congratulate me, it's not me they pay tribute to, but to her life and her struggle. She's the true Woman of Substance. She is my light, my mentor, my driving force. My win was merely God's way of compensating her.
